Step Into the Future, Powered by the Past

Ministry of Echoes is an interactive art installation that bridges the analog charm of vintage typewriters with the dynamic capabilities of artificial intelligence. As you type, your words are transformed in real time into whispered voices, evocative images, and Orwellian “thought police” creating a multisensory narrative experience.

How It Works

"The Journey to Divine Interaction"

Type to Whisper

  • Start Typing: Sit at a fully functional vintage manual typewriter. Each keystroke echoes into the AI’s attention.
  • The AI Watches: A PiCam captures your words via OCR (Optical Character Recognition) as they appear on paper.
  • Speak Through the Tube: One screen displays a lip-synced human mouth animation that whispers your typed text back in an eerie, soft tone.
  • See What It Dreams: A second screen, accessed via a black plastic tube, reveals surreal imagery inspired by your words.

1984 Thought-Policing Logic

  • Keyword Flags: As you type, GPT-4 analyzes each phrase for emotionally or ideologically charged words.
  • Live Corrections: When a flagged term is detected, the AI interjects with an Orwellian correction (e.g., “Comrade, please revise your thought”).
  • LED Excerpts: Selected passages from George Orwell’s 1984 are displayed on the RGB Matrix Panel lighted letter by letter whenever an “infraction” occurs.

AI & Voice Stack

  • Tesseract OCR – Captures your typed words from paper in real time.
  • GPT-4 – Processes and interprets your text, applies 1984-inspired “thought police” logic, and selects relevant Orwellian excerpts.
  • ElevenLabs TTS – Converts interpreted text (and any AI corrections) into a whispering, human-like voice.
  • DALL·E / Stable Diffusion – Generates vivid, dreamlike images reflecting the emotional and semantic content of your words.

Hardware

  • Vintage Manual Typewriter – The tactile, mechanical interface that connects your thoughts to the AI realm.
  • PiCam (or High-Res Webcam) – Mounted above to capture each line of typed text for instant OCR.
  • Raspberry Pi 4 – Orchestrates OCR, AI inference, TTS, image generation, and RGB Matrix control.
  • RGB LED Matrix Panel (64×64) – Displays animated excerpts from 1984, highlighting flagged words in real time.
  • USB Microphone & Speaker – Optional components for fallback voice input or amplified whisper output.
  • Dual Screens + Black Plastic Tubes
    • Screen 1: Shows a lip-synced mouth animation whispering your corrected or echoed text.
    • Screen 2: Presents AI-generated visualizations that are viewable through the second tube for immersive discovery.

Where Analog Meets AI

Ministry of Echoes turns a forgotten typewriter into a modern oracle. Every keystroke is scanned by an AI “Big Brother” that whispers corrections and lights up Orwellian warnings blending tactile nostalgia with machine judgment.

Ministry of Echoes

Text input via keyboard type freely, submission triggers on Enter or a 2.5 second pause.

Text-to-speech using the ElevenLabs API (whisper voice).

Integration with GPT-4 for real-time pattern detection and Orwellian corrections.

Caching of responses to reduce latency and API calls.

Escalation handling reactions build in intensity the longer you write.

Support for all output modes: whisper surveillance, Orwellian corrections, lip-synced mouth animation, and AI-generated imagery.
